1974 Chevy Stepside Muscle Truck

Remember when we road-tripped our LS6-powered 1974 Chevy Stepside in the June ’09 issue? The beater pickup proved hugely popular, and now we’ve got it back on the road and the dragstrip.

Refresher: the Muscle Truck has a carbureted LS6 crate engine with a small cam, a TH400 trans, a Gear Vendors under/overdrive, and a Ford 9-inch with 5.13 gears. It has Ridetech bags up front and leaf springs (on a flip kit) and Caltracs in the rear. It’s all steel and weighs 3,860 pounds sans driver.

In July, we freshened up the truck and headed to the eighth-mile Barona Dragstrip (BaronaDrags.com), where the numbers were pretty similar to what we ran at Irwindale in 2009. On motor alone, we saw 8.34 at 84.35 mph (similar performance to a 13.09 quarter-mile run, if you buy the multiply-by-1.57 conversion). With a 200hp sneeze from an NOS Big Shot plate system, the truck improved to 7.52 and 95.38 mph (sort of an 11.80). Nice.

We’ve often said that the Muscle Truck has the gnarliest-sounding exhaust of anything in the history of clapped-out trucks, and now’s your chance to hear it! The truck’s revival, road trip, and racing is all covered in video—and great audio—on an episode of our Roadkill show, which is now sponsored by Dickies. Find it by going to YouTube.com/MotorTrend and searching for “Roadkill Episode 18.” Watch the other 17 while you’re at it. Binge-viewing party! Also, Like us at Facebook.com/RoadkillShow and you can sign up for a chance to win a Dickies jacket embroidered with the Roadkill logo on the back. Dickies is giving away one a week through November 4, 2013.

  2. Keep the truck dont let Finnegan part it out for other projects. The morphing muscle truck is the best project you guys have untill we see the general mayham with the hellcat engine anyway. And even when you guys get the hellcat in the mayham people will still wonder what adventure is next for what projects and im pretty sure alot of us will want to see the muscle truck on another adventure.
